Best Point Buy Build for Ranger in D&D 5e
Rangers have had a rough reputation in 5e, but a well-built Ranger is a consistent damage dealer with excellent utility outside combat. The key is understanding that Rangers are primarily DEX-based (for finesse weapons and ranged attacks), use WIS for their spells, and rely on CON for maintaining concentration on Hunter's Mark. This guide shows you exactly where to invest your 27 points.
Why These Stats Matter for Ranger
DEX is your primary offensive stat. Rangers use finesse weapons in melee (shortsword, rapier) or ranged weapons (longbow, hand crossbow). DEX also contributes to your AC in light or medium armor. Starting at 15 (→16 with racial) and pushing to 20 over time is the standard path.
WIS is your spellcasting stat. Hunter's Mark, Zephyr Strike, and higher-level spells like Swift Quiver and Conjure Woodland Beings all use WIS. WIS also contributes to Perception (a natural fit for a Ranger) and many class-adjacent skills. WIS 14 is the standard — not as primary as a Cleric's WIS, but meaningful.
CON 14 for Hunter's Mark. This is the Ranger's defining concentration spell, and maintaining it through attacks is the source of most of their damage scaling. Concentration saves from CON 14 are necessary.
STR 8 is safe for most Rangers since you're using DEX for attacks. The exception: if you're going STR melee Ranger with Colossus Slayer (melee weapon builds). But even then, DEX finesse weapons are usually more efficient.

Sample Builds
Hunter Archer
Standard Ranger build. DEX 15 → 16+ with Wood Elf or other DEX-bonus race. WIS 14 for spells. CON 14 for Hunter's Mark concentration. Hunter's Colossus Slayer adds 1d8 on each turn reliably.
Gloom Stalker Ambusher
Gloom Stalker is widely considered the best Ranger subclass. Dread Ambusher adds an extra attack on your first turn in combat, and Umbral Sight makes you invisible in darkness to creatures with Darkvision. Identical stat priority to Hunter — the subclass features don't require different stats.
Fey Wanderer Social Ranger
Fey Wanderer adds WIS to CHA checks (Beguiling Twist). A slight investment in CHA improves the face role while WIS remains primary. Misty Wanderer gives free Misty Step casts — incredible mobility.
Best Race Choices for Ranger
DEX +2/WIS +1 — both primary stats covered. Fleet of Foot (35ft speed) synergizes with Ranger's mobile fighting style. Mask of the Wild for stealth in nature.
Crossbow Expert at level 1 lets you fire a hand crossbow as a bonus action — immediate DPR boost. Sharpshooter is the other excellent option for long-range nova damage.
DEX +2/CHA +1. Feline Agility for incredible burst movement. Natural Athlete for Athletics. Excellent for a Gloom Stalker who wants to strike fast and reposition.
DEX +2/CHA +1. Lucky trait (reroll 1s on attack, saves, ability checks) is consistently good. Naturally Stealthy for hiding behind party members. Underrated choice.
Common Point Buy Mistakes for Ranger
Underestimating Hunter's Mark: This is a bonus action cast on your first turn, then free (bonus action) re-targeting when the marked target drops. It deals an extra 1d6 on every hit. If you're not reliably maintaining concentration on it, you're losing 30-40% of your damage output.
Picking the wrong fighting style: Archery (+2 to ranged attack rolls) is overwhelmingly the best Fighting Style for bow Rangers. Defense (+1 AC) is second for melee Rangers. Two-Weapon Fighting is underwhelming because the bonus action attack competes with Hunter's Mark re-targeting.
Neglecting Wisdom: Many Ranger builds I see online have WIS 8 or 10. This makes your spells unreliable — Ensnaring Strike, Spike Growth, and Conjure Animals all have WIS-based DCs. WIS 14 is the minimum for a Ranger who wants their spells to land.
Not taking Crossbow Expert: Hand Crossbow + Crossbow Expert is the top-tier Ranger setup at levels 5-20. You can fire twice with your action (Extra Attack), then fire the bonus action hand crossbow shot. This is the highest-damage no-resource-cost rotation for a Ranger.
Multiclassing Considerations
Ranger is one of the most popular multiclass SOURCES (people dip Ranger) and DESTINATIONS (people add levels to their Ranger base).
**Ranger 3/Fighter 2 or 5**: Fighter Action Surge for a brutal nova round. Gloom Stalker + Action Surge on round 1 against a boss means 5 attacks with Dread Ambusher active.
**Ranger/Rogue**: Both DEX-based. Ranger 5 for Extra Attack, then Rogue for Sneak Attack damage. Hunter's Mark + Sneak Attack on the same hit is a huge damage burst. Requires DEX 13 for Rogue entry — already your primary stat.
**Ranger 2 Dip from Other Classes**: Many characters take Ranger 2 for Fighting Style + Spellcasting (specifically Hunter's Mark). A Fighter/Ranger 2 gets Action Surge + Archery Fighting Style.
Subclass-Specific Stat Tweaks
**Hunter**: Colossus Slayer (1d8 extra once per turn) is reliable. Giant Killer reaction attack is niche but strong against big enemies. Straightforward DEX/WIS/CON priority.
**Gloom Stalker**: Dread Ambusher's extra attack on round 1 scales with DEX. Umbral Sight uses no stats. Iron Mind (WIS proficiency on saves) arrives at level 11. Solid for DEX-primary.
**Horizon Walker**: Portal Lunge misty step (bonus action) and planar magic spells. WIS slightly more important for some features.
**Swarmkeeper**: Gathered Swarm movement and damage additions. CON slightly more useful for maintaining Summon Swarm.
**Beast Master** (revised in TCoE): Beast companion attacks use your attack bonus (DEX-based). The beast's HP scales with your level. No special stat requirements beyond the standard Ranger spread.
Ranger point buy is efficient when you commit to DEX as your primary stat, treat WIS as a meaningful secondary, and maintain CON 14 for Hunter's Mark concentration. The class's reputation as underpowered comes partly from new players splitting STR and DEX or neglecting WIS — avoid those pitfalls and you'll have a consistently effective character.
