Genasi Point Buy Guide for D&D 5e

Genasi are elemental-touched mortals, and each of the four subraces — Air, Earth, Fire, and Water — has a different secondary ASI on top of the universal +2 CON. The CON bonus is universally valuable, and the innate spellcasting each subrace receives adds utility. Fire Genasi is excellent for INT-primary casters who want constitution for concentration; Water Genasi suits WIS-primary builds; Air and Earth cover DEX and STR respectively.

Genasi Lore & Background

Genasi descend from mortals who had children with elementals, or who were transformed by prolonged exposure to elemental planes. Princes of the Apocalypse introduced Genasi to 5e as a major race, and they're central to campaigns involving the elemental planes. Each subrace reflects their elemental nature: Air Genasi have wisps of clouds around them, Fire Genasi burn with inner warmth, Earth Genasi have rocky skin, and Water Genasi carry a watery sheen.

Best Class Pairings for Genasi

Fighter point buy build

Earth Genasi (+2 CON/+1 STR) covers Fighter stats well. Fire Genasi works for Eldritch Knight with +1 INT.

Ranger point buy build

Water Genasi (+2 CON/+1 WIS) or Air Genasi (+2 CON/+1 DEX) both work depending on Ranger build focus.

Druid point buy build

Water Genasi's WIS+1 and amphibious nature suits coastal/swamp campaign Druids. Thematically perfect.

Artificer point buy build

Fire Genasi's INT+1 directly boosts Artificer spells and infusions. CON+2 helps concentration.

Barbarian point buy build

Earth Genasi (+2 CON/+1 STR) covers Barbarian's two most important stats effectively.

Common Build Mistakes

Picking the wrong subrace for your class — the +2 CON is fixed, but the secondary ASI should match your primary class stat. Don't pick Fire Genasi for a Barbarian unless you specifically want INT for some multiclass reason.

Frequently Asked Questions — Genasi

Which Genasi is best overall?
There's no universal answer — it entirely depends on your class. Fire for INT casters, Water for WIS casters, Air for DEX builds, Earth for STR builds.
Is Genasi legal in Adventurers League?
Yes, the Elemental Evil Player's Companion (where Genasi first appeared) is AL-legal, as is the Mordenkainen's version.
Does Water Genasi's amphibious trait matter much?
In nautical campaigns (Ghosts of Saltmarsh, etc.) it's excellent. In standard dungeon-crawling, rarely.
Is Fire Genasi's fire resistance significant?
Yes — fire is one of the most common damage types from monsters and traps. Halving fire damage consistently extends your HP throughout a campaign.
Can Genasi's innate spells use my class spell slots?
The once-per-long-rest uses are free. If you have spell slots from a class, you can also use those to cast the spells additional times.
