Homebrew Point Buy Variants
Standard (27 points): The official PHB rule. Balanced for published D&D adventures and Adventurers League play.
Heroic (32 points): Popular house rule for tables that want slightly more capable characters without dramatically changing the power level. Characters feel like genuinely exceptional people.
Gritty (22 points): For low-magic or survival-focused campaigns. Characters have more pronounced weaknesses, making resource management and party cooperation more important.
Some DMs also increase the maximum score from 15 to 16 or 17, or decrease the minimum from 8 to 6, to create more extreme specialists. Discuss any changes to the standard system at session zero.
