Firbolg Point Buy Guide for D&D 5e

Firbolgs from Volo's Guide to Monsters are large, gentle forest giants with an affinity for nature magic. +2 WIS and +1 STR make them ideal for Druids — your primary casting stat boosted, with enough STR to carry heavy loads and function in melee when needed. Hidden Step lets you turn invisible as a bonus action once per short rest, which has surprising tactical value for a frontline Druid or melee Ranger. Speech of Beast and Leaf allows basic communication with animals and plants.

Firbolg Lore & Background

Firbolgs are related to giants — gentle, reclusive beings who live in deep forests and avoid conflict wherever possible. They're intensely connected to nature and see themselves as stewards of the natural world rather than its masters. In Volo's Guide lore, Firbolg communities often remain hidden from other civilizations, only emerging when their forests are threatened. This makes them natural Druids, and the Detect Magic innate ability reflects their connection to natural magic.

Mechanical Traits

Firbolg traits: +2 WIS, +1 STR, Firbolg Magic (detect magic and disguise self each 1/short rest, but disguise self can decrease height by up to 3 feet), Hidden Step (bonus action to turn invisible until start of your next turn or until you attack, make a damage roll, or force a saving throw; 1/short rest), Powerful Build (count as one size larger for carrying capacity and push/drag/lift), Speech of Beast and Leaf (you can communicate simple ideas with beasts and plants — they don't understand you perfectly, but can sense your intent).

Ability Score Bonuses

2014 PHB

+2 WIS, +1 STR. One of the best Druid racial ASI combos in the game. STR+1 is useful if you plan any melee and is otherwise not wasted (CON would be better for concentration, but WIS+2 is the priority).

2024 PHB

Flexible ASIs under 2024 rules. Firbolg's unique traits (Hidden Step, Speech of Beast and Leaf) remain defining.

Best Class Pairings for Firbolg

Druid point buy build

+2 WIS is the primary Druid casting stat. Hidden Step gives defensive utility while maintaining concentration spells. Speech of Beast and Leaf enables excellent scouting via animal communication.

Ranger point buy build

+2 WIS boosts spellcasting. +1 STR enables STR-based Ranger builds. Hidden Step creates powerful ambush setup.

Cleric point buy build

+2 WIS for spellcasting. Nature Cleric or Twilight Cleric with Firbolg background is thematically excellent.

Monk point buy build

WIS+2 boosts Unarmored Defense (DEX+WIS). Hidden Step provides once-per-short-rest invisibility for bonus action setup.

Paladin point buy build

Unusual but effective — the WIS becomes useful for Wisdom saves, and STR+1 helps attacks. Thematically fits a nature-focused Paladin.

Common Build Mistakes

Not using Hidden Step strategically. Firbolg players often forget it's available every short rest — it's a bonus action with no cost beyond tracking it. Use it defensively (after dropping concentration on a spell, go invisible to reposition) or offensively (attack with advantage next turn from an unexpected position).

Frequently Asked Questions — Firbolg

Is Firbolg the best Druid race?
Consistently top 3. The +2 WIS, Hidden Step utility, and Speech of Beast and Leaf for nature-adjacent roleplay and scouting make Firbolg one of the strongest and most thematically resonant Druid races.
How does Hidden Step work with spellcasting?
Hidden Step makes you invisible as a bonus action. If you cast a spell on your next turn, the invisibility ends — but you had advantage on that spell attack if it required one, and the enemy couldn't see you during your positioning.
Can plants give useful information through Speech of Beast and Leaf?
At your DM's discretion, yes. A tree might convey that 'something big walked past recently' or 'burning things came through.' It's simple emotional impressions, not detailed intelligence.
Is Firbolg legal in Adventurers League?
Yes, Volo's Guide is AL-legal.
Does Firbolg disguise self work differently?
Yes — Firbolg Magic's disguise self can make you appear up to 3 feet shorter, allowing a Firbolg (who is 7-8 feet tall) to pass as a human. The usual spell cap means you can disguise into what's plausibly humanoid.
