Hexblood Point Buy Guide for D&D 5e

Hexbloods from Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft are mortals who struck a deal with a hag or absorbed hag-adjacent magic, gaining eerie powers and a connection to dark magic. The 2021 Hexblood uses the fully flexible ASI system — +2/+1 anywhere — making it one of the most flexible races in terms of stat customization. The class appeal is primarily thematic: Warlocks, Witches (reflavored Druids), and Bards who want a creepy supernatural origin.

Hexblood Lore & Background

Hexbloods represent mortals who made desperate bargains with hags — the ancient, terrifying crones of D&D folklore — or absorbed hag magic through proximity or ritual. They gain unsettling features: dark-ringed eyes, unusual hair, or other subtle marks of their corruption. In Ravenloft settings especially, Hexbloods fit naturally into the atmosphere of dread and unwilling transformation. Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft is the primary sourcebook.

Mechanical Traits

Hexblood traits: Flexible +2/+1 ASI to any scores, darkvision 60 ft, Eerie Token (as a bonus action, a lock of hair or fingernail becomes a Magical token you can send messages through and scry from — strange but unique), Hex Magic (disguise self and hex each once per long rest without a spell slot), and Hag's Cunning (advantage on Intelligence checks). The Eerie Token is a unique utility ability that can enable unusual communication strategies.

Ability Score Bonuses

2014 PHB

Fully flexible — +2 and +1 to any two different ability scores. This makes Hexblood work for any class. Pair with Hag's Cunning (INT advantage) for INT-adjacent builds if relevant.

2024 PHB

Hexblood was released in 2021 and uses the modern flexible ASI system natively.

Best Class Pairings for Hexblood

Warlock point buy build

Thematically perfect — Warlock of the Archfey or Great Old One + Hexblood creates a fully realized patron-bargain character. Hex from innate spellcasting saves spell slots.

Druid point buy build

A Hexblood Druid reflavored as a 'Witch' archetype is a beloved character concept. Flexible ASIs cover WIS+2.

Bard point buy build

+2 CHA supports Bard primary stat; Eerie Token creates roleplay opportunities for a Bard who sends magical message-tokens.

Rogue point buy build

+2 DEX and disguise self from Hex Magic creates a natural Arcane Trickster spy build.

Sorcerer point buy build

Wild Magic or Aberrant Mind Sorcerer with Hexblood origin creates an excellent character of uncontrolled power.

Common Build Mistakes

Ignoring Eerie Token — it's a genuinely unique ability with no equivalent in other races. It takes practice to use creatively, but sending a hair-token to spy on a dungeon room before entering can completely change tactical planning.

Frequently Asked Questions — Hexblood

Is Hexblood legal in non-Ravenloft settings?
Check with your DM — the race appears in Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft but can fit in most settings where hag lore exists.
Can Hexblood use hex without being a Warlock?
Yes — hex from Hex Magic is once per long rest regardless of class. Any class can cast it at its lowest level.
Is Hexblood in Adventurers League?
Van Richten's Guide is AL-legal. Confirm with your specific AL campaign.
What's special about Hag's Cunning?
Advantage on all Intelligence checks — ability checks, not saving throws. This includes History, Arcana, Investigation, Nature, and Religion checks, which is useful but situational.
What happens to the Eerie Token?
After you send it, it retains your hearing and vision for up to 10 days. You can see and hear from it (like a sensor) once per day. A bizarre but flavorful scouting tool.
